WordPress 7.0 and AI: What the New AI Infrastructure Means for Your Website

WordPress 7.0, codenamed “Armstrong,” launched in May 2026 and marks one of the biggest shifts in the platform’s history. Instead of a single AI button that writes text for you, WordPress has built an entire infrastructure that allows themes and plugins to talk to AI models in a standardized and secure way.

Why is it important to understand? Before WordPress 7.0, each AI plugin built its own connection to AI providers. If you used multiple AI tools at the same time, you had to manage separate API keys and settings for each plugin. This created clutter, security risks, and a poor user experience.

The four building blocks of WordPress' new AI architecture

  • AI Client: A standardized PHP library that enables plugins to send queries to AI models through one common interface – regardless of the AI ​​provider chosen.
  • Connectors API: Lets developers build connections to external AI providers using a common standard, so plugins don't have to reinvent the wheel.
  • Connectors screen: A new panel under Settings → Connectors where you, as a site owner, enter your API key once per provider. All compatible plugins can then use the connection automatically.
  • Abilities API: Defines exactly what AI tools are allowed to do on your website – an important security mechanism that prevents AI from performing actions you haven’t granted access to.

Which AI providers are supported? WordPress 7.0 comes with three pre-registered connectors: OpenAI (ChatGPT), Anthropic (Claude), and Google (Gemini). You are free to choose and switch between providers without affecting your existing AI capabilities.

What does that mean in practice right now? It’s important to have realistic expectations: WordPress 7.0 itself doesn’t add a “write my post” button. What’s landed is the foundation – the infrastructure that will allow plugin developers to build AI features much easier and more securely going forward. No data is sent to an AI provider without your active configuration and consent.

What can we expect in the future? With the foundation in place, a wave of new AI-powered plugins and features is expected throughout 2026 and 2027 – from automated SEO optimization and content generation to AI-assisted page building and customer service directly in the WordPress admin.
